Safety Series: Workplace Bloodborne Pathogens

by | EPIC Modular Process

Training videos on bloodborne pathogen safety are always demonstrating the worst case scenario. These dramatic scenes usually involve a man falling from a tall ladder that leads to a bloody disaster. Once the video has its audiences’ adrenaline is pumping, they then get to how to clean up the accident.  These extreme incidents do happen in the workplace, but there are less dramatic scenarios that should be approached with the same caution. Here the list of possible bloodborne diseases that could be present no matter the scenario in the workplace:

  • Hepatitis B (HBV)
  • Hepatitis C (HCV)
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Once an accident does happen, whether it is falling when working on a modular skid or cutting your hand from broken glass in the break room, proper disposal of contaminated items is essential. Use biohazard bags to dispose all contaminated materials. The biohazard warning labeled is required on any bag or container that is holding contaminated materials (i.e gloves, bandages,, and clothing).

Below is a short informational video that will give you a clear understanding of the proper disposal procedures of body fluids resulting from a workplace accident. Remember, safety is and forever will be of EPIC importance.
