A prominent pet food manufacturer was in the process of expanding its production capabilities to meet increasing market demand. A critical aspect of this expansion involved the construction of a new pet food ingredient storage system. Traditionally, such storage systems are built on-site due to their size and complexity. However, the manufacturer faced significant challenges with this traditional approach, including prolonged downtime during construction and inefficiencies associated with on-site assembly. 

To overcome these issues, the manufacturer sought a modular system that could be prefabricated, pre-assembled, and quickly installed on-site. The large size and complexity of the storage system were challenges that the modular design concept would have to address to achieve these goals. 




In partnership with a General Contractor, EPIC approached the problem from a creative perspective, envisioning a modular skid system that could be prefabricated and pre-assembled off-site. This approach would allow the General Contractor to minimize on-site construction time and reduce downtime significantly.   

EPIC designed and built the storage system using food-grade stainless steel produced in the dedicated manufacturing facility, ensuring the highest quality and adherence to stringent hygiene and safety standards required for pet food ingredients. The system included multiple large storage tanks, each connected to a central Clean-In-Place (CIP) system to ensure easy and efficient cleaning and maintenance. Despite the system’s size and complexity, EPIC managed to break it down into modular components that could be easily transported and assembled on-site.  




  • Minimized Downtime: The prefabricated and pre-assembled modular components significantly reduced on-site installation time, minimizing production downtime and accelerating the project’s completion. Much of the modular system was constructed concurrently with the site’s architectural room improvements. 
  • Cost Savings: By reducing labor costs associated with on-site assembly and minimizing downtime, the modular skid system provided significant cost savings for the manufacturer. 
  • Enhanced Hygiene and Safety: Constructed from food-grade stainless steel and equipped with a central Clean-In-Place (CIP) system, the storage solution ensured the highest standards of hygiene and safety, essential for pet food ingredient storage. Additionally, fabricating the system inside a dedicated clean in-house clean stainless steel shop rather than an active construction site significantly enhanced assembly cleanliness. 
  • Design Scalability: The modular design allows for easy future expansion, enabling the manufacturer to scale the storage system without significant disruptions or additional costs. With future growth plans requiring more manufacturing lines, this design supports a “design once, build many” strategy, with flexible interconnecting plant piping to accommodate different layouts. 
  • Production Gains: The efficient design and quick installation process improved overall operational efficiency, allowing the manufacturer to meet increasing market demands more effectively.
