What FDA’s Front-of-Package Rule Means for Your Packaging Line

by | EPIC Machine Vision

On January 16, 2025, the FDA proposed a sweeping new rule to require front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labeling on most packaged food sold in the U.S. The goal? Make it easier for consumers to understand key nutrition facts at a glance—especially levels of added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium—and drive healthier food choices across the population.

But for food and beverage manufacturers, this new rule signals more than a public health shift—it’s a compliance and packaging transformation. It means verifying not just what’s on the label, but how it appears, where it’s placed, and whether it accurately matches the product inside. That’s where EPIC Systems’ automated vision inspection plays a critical role.

A Closer Look at the FDA’s Proposed FOP Labeling Rule

Under the proposed rule:

  • Most packaged foods would require a “Nutrition Info” box on the front label
  • It must clearly indicate whether the product is Low, Medium, or High in added sugars, sodium, and saturated fat
  • Nutrient amounts must be shown as a percentage of the Daily Value (DV)
  • The FOP label must appear on the principal display panel, alongside branding and other core graphics
  • Large manufacturers would have 3 years to comply; smaller ones, 4 years

The proposed rule is modeled on successful labeling systems in other countries and is aligned with the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2020–2025). According to the FDA, front-facing, easy-to-read nutrition facts could improve consumer understanding, reduce chronic disease, and support healthier product reformulations.

But implementing this rule at scale – especially across high-speed production lines – requires more than graphic design updates. It requires automated label inspection systems that can validate every package in real time.

EPIC Delivers More Than Vision: We Integrate the Entire System

As a machine vision integrator, EPIC builds complete turnkey solutions. We don’t just install cameras and software – we design and engineer the full system infrastructure needed to keep your line compliant, efficient, and ready for changing regulations.

Here’s how we approach front-of-package labeling compliance:

1. Characters & Code Verification

Front-of-package labeling introduces new data that must be accurate, legible, and reliably printed on every package.

Our systems:

  • Use high-speed OCR/OCV to verify nutrient levels and % DV in real time
  • Confirm clarity, completeness, and contrast of label text under inspection lighting
  • Simultaneously check expiration dates, lot codes, and other regulatory markings

What we integrate: High-resolution cameras, custom lighting, and automated rejection stations for non-conforming products.

2. Alignment & Positioning

The FDA rule requires FOP information to appear in a specific location on the front label. EPIC vision systems inspect every package to ensure this requirement is met.

Our systems:

  • Detect label skew, misplacement, or improper orientation
  • Validate placement of the Nutrition Info box on the principal display panel
  • Confirm label presence on flexible, rigid, curved, or clear packaging

What we integrate: Custom brackets, sensor mounting, guide rails, and conveyor modifications to ensure reliable presentation of the label to the camera.

3. Match & Verification

Packaging must reflect what’s inside the package. That means more than checking text – it requires real-time correlation between product SKUs, labels, and line configurations.

Our systems:

  • Verify that each label matches the correct product and recipe
  • Read barcodes and SKUs to cross-reference with label claims
  • Prevent mix-ups across primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging

What we integrate: Barcode readers, reject mechanisms, diverters, and even extra conveyor belts or rejection tables as needed to ensure non-conforming product is automatically removed.

The EPIC Difference: Engineered for the Plant Floor

When you work with EPIC, you’re getting a partner that understands real-world plant conditions – not just lab tests or software specs.

We provide:

  • Custom mechanical integration: From inspection enclosures to new conveyors and product handling modifications
